About Aluminium

Editorial overview

What is aluminium?

Aluminium (Al, atomic number 13) is a silvery-white light metal — about one-third the density of copper or steel. Per USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, it is produced industrially from bauxite ore: first refined to alumina via the Bayer process, then reduced to metal via Hall-Héroult electrolysis. About 4 tonnes of dried bauxite yield 2 tonnes of alumina, which in turn yield 1 tonne of aluminium (USGS Bauxite & Alumina 2026).

How aluminium is priced

Aluminium trades on multiple officially regulated exchanges. Each publishes its own daily settlement, fixing or auction reference price for its specific contract — there is no single “world price”. The complete list of active regulated venues for aluminium:

Principle: One True Source for All. Every officially regulated exchange with an active contract is listed, regardless of geography or sanctions. Cash-settled contracts list both the listing exchange (where the contract clears) and the underlying benchmark index used for final settlement. Fastmarkets, S&P Global Platts and Argus are regulated benchmark administrators under UK/EU BMR, not exchanges. Source: TSM exchanges registry (maintained from public regulatory and exchange filings).

Where aluminium comes from

Per USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, world primary smelter production in 2025 (estimated) was 74,000 kt. Top producing countries: China 45,000 kt, India 4,200 kt, Russia 3,900 kt, Canada 3,300 kt, UAE 2,700 kt, Bahrain 1,600 kt, Australia 1,500 kt. Bauxite reserves (the raw input): world total 29 billion tonnes — Guinea 7.4 Bt, Australia 3.7 Bt (JORC-compliant: 1.7 Bt), Vietnam 3.1 Bt, Indonesia 2.9 Bt, Jamaica 2.0 Bt, Brazil 1.7 Bt (USGS Bauxite & Alumina 2026). Full breakdown in the production and reserves sections.

What aluminium is used for

Global aluminium consumption by end-use sector in 2024, per the EN+ Group Annual Report 2024 (data sources: Bloomberg, CRU, CNIA, IAI, Antaike): Automotive 25.6%, Construction 19.9%, Packaging 16.4%, Electrical engineering 16.3% (≈78% combined; the remainder is machinery, consumer durables, foil and other uses). For the U.S. specifically, USGS MCS 2026 reports Transportation 36%, Packaging 24%, Building 13%, Electrical 9%, Consumer durables 8%, Machinery 8%, Other 2%.

Key facts about aluminium supply

Carbon intensity (2023, IAI global average): 14.8 t CO2e per tonne of primary aluminium (cradle-to-gate), driven by electricity used in electrolysis (IAI Carbon Footprint FAQs); sector-wide intensity including recycling: 10.04 t CO2e per tonne (IAI emissions data 2023). Recycling (IAI): Global Recycling Efficiency Rate 76%; Europe RER 81%; North America RIR 57%; the transportation sector recycles ~9 Mt/year at 86% efficiency (IAI Aluminium Recycling Factsheet). Recycled production scale: Global recycled ingot production reached 37 Mt in 2021 (IAI Material Flow Analysis 2023); China produces >10 Mt/year from scrap, ~1/3 of global volume (IAI factsheet); in the U.S., 3.6 Mt was recovered from purchased scrap in 2025, with old scrap equalling ~28% of apparent consumption (USGS MCS 2026). Metal in use: ~75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in productive use today (IAI). Reserves cover: Global bauxite reserves 29 Bt vs world mining 440 Mt in 2025e — ~66 years of cover at current rates (USGS Bauxite & Alumina 2026).

How to read this

Rising stocks typically signal market surplus or weakening demand. Falling stocks typically signal tightening physical supply or strong end-use demand. Cancelled warrants (metal earmarked for withdrawal) are a leading indicator of future stock draws.

For warehouse location breakdown, cancelled warrants, and historical series, consult the LME official stock reports directly.
