About Rhodium

Editorial overview

What is rhodium?

Rhodium (Rh, atomic number 45) is a very rare platinum-group metal, valued for its high melting point, corrosion resistance, and catalytic performance. It is a precious transition metal used mainly in autocatalysts and a smaller set of industrial applications.

How rhodium is priced

No regulated futures or exchange-listed contract exists for rhodium anywhere in the world. Public daily reference prices come from three private producers/refiners that quote bid/ask spot prices on their own websites: Johnson Matthey (London), Heraeus (Hanau, Germany) and Anglo American Platinum (Johannesburg). Fastmarkets publishes a daily rhodium bid/ask assessment based on producer and dealer surveys.

Where rhodium comes from

Rhodium is mined almost entirely as a byproduct of platinum-group-metal operations, with South Africa the dominant source and smaller output from Russia, Zimbabwe, and North America according to Johnson Matthey’s 2026 PGM market report. The report’s rhodium supply table shows South Africa at 557 thousand oz of 2026 primary supply, Russia at 55 thousand oz, Zimbabwe at 43 thousand oz, and North America at 19 thousand oz. (Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report 2026) Full breakdown in the production and reserves sections.

Who produces rhodium

Leading rhodium-producing companies include Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum in South Africa, Sibanye-Stillwater at Marikana in South Africa, and Norilsk Nickel in Russia, all of which are major PGM miners and refiners. Johnson Matthey’s 2026 market report attributes most primary rhodium supply to South Africa and Russia, consistent with these producers’ regional footprint. What rhodium is used for

Rhodium demand is overwhelmingly automotive: Johnson Matthey says autocatalysts account for 85% to 95% of annual consumption over the last decade, and its 2026 report shows automotive demand at 856 thousand oz in 2026, or about 85% of the 1,005 thousand oz total. Glassmaking is the second meaningful outlet in the report at 38 thousand oz in 2026, while chemicals account for 88 thousand oz. Per-country production data not published by USGS

USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 does not publish per-country production or reserves data specifically for Rhodium. USGS reports only platinum and palladium broken out by country; rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium are reported only as part of the combined PGM group (six platinum-group metals). For the consolidated PGM-group table, see the PGM (Platinum Group Metals) page.

Ranked by latest disclosed total PGM production (4E or 6E basis)

Companies ranked by most recently disclosed annual platinum-group metals production (thousand troy ounces). Each card links to the primary source (annual report, production report, or exchange filing). "Not disclosed" means the company does not publish metal-specific tonnage — common for private Chinese/state-owned groups and pre-production projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Auto-generated from primary-source data
Who are the largest global producers of rhodium?
Among 780+ producers tracked on TSM Hub, the largest disclosed rhodium producers include Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) (South Africa), Anglo American Platinum (Amplats / Valterra Platinum) (South Africa), Sibanye-Stillwater (South Africa / United States). Some operating rhodium producers do not publish metal-specific tonnage — such as African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) — Two Rivers Platinum Mine (South Africa), Nornickel (MMC Norilsk Nickel) (Russia) — and are listed with an “Undisclosed Output” badge instead of a rank, in line with our principle of never inventing numbers absent from primary sources. Full ranking with primary-source links is available in the producers section.
What is the primary source for rhodium production and reserves data?
Country-level rhodium production and reserves figures on TSM Hub are sourced directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, the U.S. Geological Survey's authoritative annual reference. Company-level production figures come from each producer's official annual report, production report, or regulated exchange filing.
