About Zinc

Editorial overview

What is zinc?

Zinc is a base metal used mainly as a corrosion-protection coating, especially on steel. It is also used in brass, die-casting alloys, chemicals, and other industrial applications.

How zinc is priced

Zinc trades on multiple officially regulated exchanges. Each publishes its own daily settlement, fixing or auction reference price for its specific contract — there is no single “world price”. The complete list of active regulated venues for zinc:

Principle: One True Source for All. Every officially regulated exchange with an active contract is listed, regardless of geography or sanctions. Cash-settled contracts list both the listing exchange (where the contract clears) and the underlying benchmark index used for final settlement. Fastmarkets, S&P Global Platts and Argus are regulated benchmark administrators under UK/EU BMR, not exchanges. Source: TSM exchanges registry (maintained from public regulatory and exchange filings).

Where zinc comes from

According to USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, the top zinc mining countries in 2025e were China (4.1 Mt), Peru (1.5 Mt), Australia (1.1 Mt), India (0.87 Mt), and Mexico (0.78 Mt). USGS also lists world mine production at 13.0 Mt and world reserves at 240 Mt, with the United States, Kazakhstan, Russia, Sweden, and Bolivia also among the notable producers/reserve holders. Full breakdown in the production and reserves sections.

Who produces zinc

Major zinc producers include Glencore, Vedanta/Hindustan Zinc, and Teck Resources, with Glencore and Vedanta both publicly identifying zinc as a core metals business and Hindustan Zinc repeatedly reporting zinc operating results on Vedanta’s IR pages. USGS also notes that U.S. zinc mined in 2025 came from five companies across six operations. Full list of producers below.

What zinc is used for

USGS says most reported U.S. zinc consumption went to galvanized steel, followed by brass and bronze, zinc-base alloys, and other uses. I was not able to verify a public ILZSG application-percentage breakdown from a primary source in the time available, so I am omitting exact global application shares rather than guessing.

Key facts about zinc supply

  • USGS MCS 2026: world zinc mine production was 13.0 Mt in 2025e versus reserves of 240 Mt, or about 18 years of reserve cover. USGS MCS 2026
  • USGS MCS 2026: China led 2025e mine production at 4.1 Mt, followed by Peru at 1.5 Mt and Australia at 1.1 Mt. USGS MCS 2026
  • USGS MCS 2026: U.S. net import reliance for refined zinc was 73% of apparent consumption in 2025e. USGS MCS 2026
  • USGS MCS 2026: U.S. zinc mine production fell to 670 kt in 2025e, down 12% from 2024, mainly because of lower ore grades at Red Dog. USGS MCS 2026
  • USGS MCS 2026: identified zinc resources are about 1.9 billion tons globally. USGS MCS 2026

How to read this

Rising stocks typically signal market surplus or weakening demand. Falling stocks typically signal tightening physical supply or strong end-use demand. Cancelled warrants (metal earmarked for withdrawal) are a leading indicator of future stock draws.

For warehouse location breakdown, cancelled warrants, and historical series, consult the LME official stock reports directly.

TSM Hub does not auto-fetch SHFE or COMEX stocks (SHFE anti-bot challenge; CME Group Terms of Use explicitly prohibit automated access). Links point to originating exchanges for direct consultation.

Ranked by latest disclosed contained Zn production

Companies ranked by most recently disclosed annual zinc production (Zn-contained, kilotonnes). Each card links to the primary source (annual report, production report, or exchange filing). "Not disclosed" means the company does not publish metal-specific tonnage — common for private Chinese/state-owned groups and pre-production projects.
